4 Turkish Activists Sentenced to a Total of 45 Years in Prison

Akbar AzadHRANA News Agency – The General and Revolutionary Court of Baharestan town, in Tehran, convicted four Turkish activists to a total of 45 years imprisonment and exile. Although the convictions have been made based on charges of organizing illegal groups, but the court documents indicate that they had no violent activities and they have been active mostly in the field of cultural and linguistic issues. According to the report of Human Rights Activists News Agency in Iran (HRANA), based on a verdict issued by the General and Revolutionary Court of Baharestan town, in Tehran, Mr. Akbar Azad, journalist and researcher has been sentenced to 10 years imprisonment and 2 years exile in Dareh Shahr of Ilam province, Mr. Alireza Farshi has been sentenced to 15 years imprisonment and 2 years exile in Bagh-e Malek of Khozestan province, Mr. Behnam Sheikhi has been sentenced to 10 years imprisonment and 2 years exile in Masjed Soleiman of Khozestan, and Hamid Manafi has been sentenced to 10 years imprisonment and 2 years exile in Azna city of Lorestan province.  

The total sentences for these four citizens is 45 years imprisonment.
Commemoration of the International Day of Mother Language in 2014 is the most important allegation against them, although, in the verdict it has been mentioned that “participation in organizing an association in order to disrupt the national security”, was their charge.

It should be noted that this ruling has been issued on February 19, 2017 and was communicated to these activists, on the International Day of Mother Language.
